“The creatures need to be fed and watered.
Check the data from last night.
And pick the next experiment from the list.
[…]
Step by Step.
Follow protocols to the letter.
A scientific method is a method, not a suggestion box.“
Kirsh, “Alien: Earth” (Episode 6)
Science (experimentation specifically) is about following a well defined process. A process that’s been defined by your peers to ensure results are gathered properly, and you experiment safely.
It’s typical not to be permitted to work on high voltage electricity without someone else being present for example – that’s about safety. Not eating in the lab, or allowing any form of cross-contamination to disturb the results of your experiment. And, at all times, considering your own safety above all else.
So I do like this exchange from Kirsh. But it’s lost on his audience – a “hybrid synth” with a 10-year-old brain. Sadly he does not follow protocol and comes to a rather “sticky” end. Quite why individuals are allowed to work in isolation in such a dangerous environment baffles me and, in a film where a lot of scientific method should be exercised, very little is. But … if protocols were followed (to the letter) we wouldn’t have such an exciting film, would we?
You suspect Kirsh knows exactly what’s going to happen. He sees what’s coming and (probably) hopes it wipes out the human race.
